Queuing for an event at the Annecy Animation Festival, I noticed an amazing shop selling high quality graphic novels. I mentioned Moebius to French animator, Pierre-Loïs who was standing in line too, his eyes widened, he nodded reverentially and said, “He’s like a god to us!”
There’s a good BBC 4 documentary "In Search of Moebius"
In one part of the documentary he talks about the mysterious source of his inspiration:
“I create forms and ideas but I’m not responsible for them. I only channel them... I put myself in a trance-like state in which something takes hold. That something might be from beyond consciousness or the gods, or some genies or I don’t know what… maybe extra-terrestrial beings! Anything is possible.” (Moebius)
This, of course, could be a bit of self-mythologizing!
Moebius also explains what a huge influence a visit to the New Mexico desert was, the wide-open spaces and earthy colours. The sense of another world.
The music for the documentary featured deceptively simple melodic work by Karl Bartos (from Kraftwerk) which echoed the sharp precise art style of Moebius.
I just finished reading “The World of Edena” by Moebius:

It's kind of a Sci-fi reworking of the Adam and Eve story.
It is highly imaginative and dreamlike.
The artwork has clean, clear lines and vivid colours (which would lend themselves well to animation).
Update 31/01/2025: Just discovered there was a CGI Animation created around the world of Edena!
"The Planet Once More" is a short film that arose from a meeting between Jean Giraud, Isabelle Giraud and Pierre Buffin. "La Planete encore" premiered in Paris in 2011.
Update 07/05/2025: Also this animation "The Time Masters" Directed by sci-fi animator René Laloux (Fantastic Planet) and designed by Mœbius, The Time Masters is a visually fantastic existentialist space adventure.
The late Jean Giraud (Moebius) who lived 8 May 1938 to 10 March 2012 has left a tremendous legacy:

Are you familiar with the work of Moebius?
